Whether you use a static data file of products, or read data from a transfer file, you should have tariff / commodity codes against the products within a consignment so that the appropriate customs data can be declared.
One field which affects the way Supplementary Statistical Declarations are printed is the field "Nett on IETS", as the Customs Tariff will advise is that no net weight is to be declared. If this is not the case with your tariff records, please ensure that the box is ticked by clicking on it. The other fields which should be completed if you are intending to submit NES declarations are the procedure codes and licensing details which are entered in the box headed Additional information SAD Box 44 and will typically be
"1000 001" and "L=9999" - NO LICENCE REQUIRED
respectively
We would make the point that if you are creating a product file there are fields which require data entry because they are used by other routines in the system. The first of these is the H.S. Commodity Code. This is the Customs code for the product and should consist of the eight numeric digit code. It is used by the
Auto-allocation routine of the system, which summarises the weights and values by commodity code, and the resulting data is used for declarations to H M Customs. If you are unsure of the tariff number, you will need access to the customs tariff either in printed form, or, if you have internet access from your computer, by accessing the HMCE Web site from the Help options in this system. Some commodity codes also require the presentation of supplementary data,
e.g. petrol requires litres as well as weight, although there is a proposal to collect only the supplementary data (July 2005). A current list of those codes requiring such additional data is available at www.uktradeinfo.com
There are now routines built in to the system to verify that there is a tariff record existing against an item stored on the invoice, but more of that later.
